Although it is desirable to keep a book as original as possible it is sometimes more prudent to rebind and if possible foil block the cover to as close to the original as possible. With the aid of digital technology it is now possible to scan a damaged image, digitally clean it up and have a block made to re foil the image on the new cover.
This book came in with a very damaged cloth case. The decision was taken to rebind with cloth to as closely resemble the original as possible and reproducing the images to the front board and spine.
Although faded, the cloth under the paste down revealed its original vibrant green. The image on the title page was scanned and resized this with the reproduced spine image were turned into blocks to allow the new case to be gold foiled.
What was once a damaged binding has been re-bound in new cloth. The spine and front board have been re-blocked with a digitally tidied up copy of the original. The original boards were used as the front board was inscribed on the inner paste down.
The book being part one of a two volume set is now in keeping with its later partner.
